Subject: Modern Dance Arts 

Grade Level: Kindergarten - 3rd Grade (After School Program)

Unit summary: We will be teaching the history of modern dance and the fundamentals, in addition to improvisation and individualism through locomotive and non-locomotive movements

Standard 7: Perceive and analyze artistic work

Benchmarks 

  •   Performs a range of simple, repeated, intentional movements and gestures.

  •   Uses space and resources creatively.

  •   Chooses and explores ways of moving rhythmically, expressively, and playfully.

  •   Participates in dance that is taught and/or creative movement invented by peers.

  •   Shows an understanding that dance consists of combined movements and gestures,

    usually performed with music or a beat.

  •   Shares their responses to stimuli through movement with, for example,

    peers or practitioners.

  •   Shares thoughts and feelings in response to dance experiences, either as

    a performer or as part of an audience, giving reasons for likes and dislikes.

  •   Shares views and listens appropriately to the views of others on their own

    or others’ work.

    We will assess them through their performance of the choreography in their final presentation 

    Project Description: Cultivate a passion for dance and movement, educate the students on the basics of modern, teach them to become comfortable performing, and with improvisation 

    Project Map: Once the students understand some fundamentals of movement and modern they should be able to improvise movements with modern influences 

    Approximate Time: 3:30-5:30 pm

    Procedures: We will teach this class in the school gym, and we will encourage the students to wear comfortable clothes that they have full range of movement. We will explore modern dance pioneers and early techniques. For students with movement limitations we will work with them in the beginning of the course to find out what they feel comfortable with, and we will provide modifications.

Implementing Brain Breaks & Journaling:  1. Since our program is after school, we are implementing a brain break after school, but before our dance class begins. Our students will have been in school all day, and are most likely exhausted. Thus, before starting class we will allow our students 10 minutes to reflect on their day and journal how they are feeling. By allowing our students to journal before our dance program begins, we will encourage them to express how they felt during the day through their dancing, in hopes of eliminating feelings of anxiety, stress, and depression.  2. Paola Padron's Statement of Philosophy

My goal as a dance teacher is to create learning opportunities that reinvigorate the excitement for movement for my students and myself during every class. I wish to allow dance to shape who my students are, how they relate to others, and how they perceive the world around them.
